KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 - Malaysia will ditch the RM2.3 billion Eurocopter defence deal as it battens down to face the global economic storm, sources said today.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri NajibAbdul Razak decided to cut out the EC725 military helicopter contract over the weekend when the government reviewed its expenses in light of falling revenues from crude oil and palm oil and slowing economic growth for the next few years.

"The Eurocopter deal is off due to the bleak economic times ahead," a source told The Malaysian Insider.Opposition leaders and critics had savaged the purchase of the dozen EC725 helicopters, saying its RM193 million price tag per aircraft was more than double of Brazil's contract for 50 EC725 helicopters, which came tom RM84 million per aircraft. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said it will investigate the deal.

Sarisffuddin,

Hai LK?Ariff and I are in KL till tomorrow.Ariff's nephew got engaged in Seremban today.
Ahhh..so glad our Finance Minister has started to take extremely prudent measures. Its a start at least.I am sure we'll be seeing more cost-cutting measures to cushion the bad economic weather.I believe more non-urgent deals and projects will be scrapped! The government cannot hide the fact that we are not 'insulated'.

Mamasita, many of us hope for the same thing too from the top leaders. Aha, the engagement fever! The family & I are on the road too. My wife's cousin got engaged in Jerteh yesterday. Now in KT, enjoying the deepavali break until tmrow. My regards to bro Sak, have a good journey tmrow! :)

This is good news indeed. And I'd say the bloggers have played their part in putting the pressure on the powers-that-be towards making this decision.

Yes, the economic downturn is a major factor, but "some people" would not have cared because "bukan duit bapak dia" - in the name of "commissions".

But the bloggers did their part. It's not a case of me being "perasan" or "syok sendiri" here for I'm not claiming to be one of these - I didn't write anything about it. And even if I had, it would have not been too significant considering the number of hits I'm getting.

However, there are many of the "serious and respectable" bloggers - people that include you, of course, and those like Sakmongkol AK47 etc etc whom the powers-that-be read * quietly*. It's easy to "syok sendiri" but don't underestimate the influence that you people have in shaping decisions.

Me, well; maybe * one day* I'll get the readership - especially the QUALITY of it. Then, I will be a factor in these people's decisions too:-)

Salam Tuan,

Pelik tapi benar. Tapi boss-boss peduli apa? Suruh jugak kita bertungkus lumus buat projek tu dan attend meetings. Bila projek tu shelved, tak pulak keluar apa-apa surat dari Client. Senyap camtu saja. "Ero (bukan nama sebenar), you tak perlu attend meetings tu lagi and stop working on the project.", kata boss.

Anyways, elok jugak ditangguhkan.

Terimakasih bro for the comment.

:-) thanks for the comment bro.
